Joan’s Story

Sunday night May 14th 2016 my husband told me he wanted me to look under his arm it felt like a mole or something bothering him, it wasn’t. It was a tick and I couldn’t remove it. I said wait till morning and we’ll go to the doctor and let him take care of it. He then told me that there were two more one at his belt and one behind his knee. First thing on Monday morning we were at the doctor’s office when they opened, we explained all we needed was to have these ticks removed. They took him right back; the doctor came in and removed the ticks. He told us, being that we were there, he wanted to do some blood work.

A few minutes later he came back and said, Mr. Stephenson it’s lucky that you came in today you are at high risk for a heart attack. I was stunned. The doctor started spouting off all these medications he was starting him on and a nuclear stress test for later in the week. My husband who never balks at anything stood there and said NO then said I have seen all those commercials I’m not taking the drugs. I asked what are his options, the doctor stepped out and came back with a sheet full of instructions about eating on a 6 inch, 4 inch and 2-inch plate graduated down from breakfast, lunch and dinner, exercise but not to begin until after the stress test. I asked is this it? and he took the paper and wrote the name of a book and the author on the bottom and said this doctor wrote a book it might help.

When we got to the car I called Barnes and Noble the book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. was in stock so we went and picked it up. I started reading aloud on the way home, after a couple of pages I said this isn’t us. My husband said “I have lived my whole life eating and doing whatever I wanted and if I want to enjoy the rest of my life I’ll have to change” I said “okay we can try it for a week and see what happens.” His response was “try means fail, when we get home you take care of the cabinets and I will take care of the refrigerator and freezer.” (I was I shock. Who is this man?) However, this is what we did.

We became Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) May 16th 2016. He did have a stress test that Friday and went back every 2 weeks to get checked for a couple of months. Within one month his cholesterol dropped and all his levels were in normal range with no medication. We eat much more than ever before, not skimpy portions. I wish we had known about this always. We no longer get sick, wake up feeling great, look younger. Weight loss comes with it. Without trying, we have lost over 150 lbs.
